Mermaid of Warsaw

The Mermaid of Warsaw, lovingly called Syrenka, is the guardian and protector of Warsaw (the capital city of Poland). According to the legend, she met a group of fishermen in the river when she tried to free their catch, and charmed them. When a wealthy merchant tried to take her as a trophy, the fishermen defended her and she swore to protect them and their home city from that moment forward. A statue of her stands in Warsaw’s Old Town.
